Dover Air Force Base has reported that a Cessna 172 based at its Aero Club in Dover, Delaware, made an emergency landing, coming to a halt on a four-lane highway. Pictures indicate that the Cessna sustained damage to the outboard portion of the left wing and the left horizontal stabilizer, at minimum. However, according to an official statement from Dover Air Force Base there were no injuries as a result of the incident, the cause of which is still under investigation.
The incident occurred on Monday and, according to local news reports, the airplane touched down in a field, went through a fence and ended up on Route 1 near the approach end of Runway 1 at Dover Air Force Base. A car on the highway swerved into a guardrail to avoid hitting the Cessna.
The airplane was reportedly occupied by a flight instructor and a student.
